POLY STYRENE: I AM A CLICHÉ

Poly Styrene was the first woman of colour in the UK to front a successful rock band. She introduced the world to a new sound of rebellion, using her unconventional voice to sing about identity, consumerism, postmodernism, and everything she saw unfolding in late 1970s Britain, with a rare prescience. As the frontwoman of X-Ray Spex, the Anglo-Somali punk musician was also a key inspiration for the riot grrrl and Afropunk movements.

Expurgo: Deforming Europe

In 2018, Brazilian band Expurgo was invited to play in the Obscene Extreme Festival, in Czech Republic, and went on a tour through the interior of Europe. In their luggage, the group took 15 years of stories, friendship and extreme music. The documentary gathers testimonies, behind-the-scenes footage and the concerts of the Minas Gerais band on their first tour of Europe.

Venezuelan Punk Rock History. Is not Fad

This documentary is about the history of the emergence of punk rock in Venezuela in the 80s through interviews with its main protagonists. Throughout the interviews, the protagonists from different parts of Venezuela give their opinion about the punk movement, the main bands that emerged, and the characteristics of their songs.
In a Venezuela marked by 20 years of political conflict, this documentary takes on special relevance because it shows how part of the punk movement aligned itself with the ideals of the Chavez process while other punks continued in their struggle and protest, which in many cases led to exile outside Venezuela, including its own director Ismael Torrealba and his executive producer Roger Nunez.

No Spicy No Fun – The Rebel Riot in the UK

No Spicy No Fun follows The Rebel Riot, a punk band from Myanmar formed under the military dictatorship, on their 2017 tour of the UK where they unleash their own blend of Buddhism and anarchy on the birthplace of punk rock. (a recommendation of Paul and Dorothea)

Kevin Walter’s Tower Rats!

Tower Rats is an outrageous mixtape of grotesque flamboyance and ludicrous behavior that features the beloved superheroes of Tromaville, New Jersey! A trash film spectacle that has absolutely no plot! This endeavor of love was crafted by using Lloyd Kaufman’s “Make Your Own Damn Movie” and John Waters’ low budget filmmaking as its guide. This is an ASSault on traditional filmmaking. Many called it Punk.
